Phoenix Education

ABOUT US

Phoenix Education Reports and Services Ltd. was established in 2012 by Managing Director Neil Barber. Neil has over 20 years of teaching experience in the Merseyside area, 10 of those in various senior leadership positions. He has used his vast experience as a senior leader and outstanding maths teacher, allied to his specialised statistical and data handling background to develop "Phoenix" into a company which produces, measures and presents impact in education. Neil also currently works part-time at Liverpool Hope University as Course Lead for the PGDE in Further and Post-Compulsory Education.

Phoenix was originally established to provide consultancy services and produce data driven educational reports in a number of areas, including student progress, behaviour and maths. However, they have now evolved to also incorporate other specialised areas.

Phoenix have produced maths presentations which they deliver in schools throughout the country. These are designed with particular impact groups in mind for both the primary and secondary sectors. The "Primary Maths Impact Session" series is aimed at moving Year 6 pupils to National Standard and beyond. The "GCSE Maths Impact Session" series is aimed at moving Year 11 students to grade 4/5.

Education in the Alternative Provision sector is a key area for Phoenix. The ©Phoenix Progress System is a system of measurement of student progress specifically designed by Phoenix for the Alternative Provision sector. This is currently being used in a number of AP schools in the Merseyside area. The ©Phoenix Progress System has been submitted to the Department for Education as a possible Alternative Provision standard for measuring progress.

“The school provided an extensive report by Phoenix that provides excellent evidence of the attainment and progress of the students. It is an excellent report and it would be appropriate for the school to review its progress against each of the achievement recommendations.”
Free School Pre-Ofsted inspection report.

“The school evaluates behaviour as good and I would very much agree with this. The Phoenix report is extensive and provides a wealth of data to support the judgement.”

GCSE MATHS IMPACT SESSIONS

GCSE Maths Impact Sessions are aimed at taking students to grade 4/5 in GCSE Maths. They are primarily used as three hour enhancement sessions in key broad areas of maths for up to 50 students. Each session covers essential prior knowledge and uses staged progression to develop this forward to grade 4/5. (Click here for brochure.)

The sessions are led by an outstanding facilitator with vast experience of teaching students of all abilities and backgrounds. Student to student interaction, student to facilitator interaction, various assessment techniques and higher level questioning underpin each session.

Impact Sessions are ideally used as monthly or half termly enhancement sessions throughout Year 10 or 11, but can also be used as a revision package during the run up to GCSEs. The sessions are suitable for use during the normal school day, as a Saturday school or as a holiday school.

The impact of each session will be measured for all students. This will lead to an “Impact Rating” for each student as well as an overall “Impact Rating” for the whole group. Student feedback on the effectiveness of the session will also be produced. This will be delivered to the school within 24 hours.

Impact Sessions can also be used as a series of teaching sessions for smaller numbers of students. These shorter, smaller group sessions can also be hired. This would be at a cheaper, daily rate, rather than the usual, full single session price.

FINAL IMPACT REVISION SESSIONS

“FINAL IMPACT” was written following popular demand from numerous schools. This consists of two half day revision sessions covering key areas right across the syllabus. (Can be booked for one session or both sessions.)

FOCUS AUDIENCE: STUDENTS AIMING FOR GRADE 4/5

For full details see “GCSE Maths Impact Sessions” brochure.

“The average impact rating of all Maths Impact Sessions delivered to date is 91%.”
84% of students for all sessions delivered to date rated the presenter as very effective.

KS2 NEW N.C. MATHS IMPACT SESSIONS

“KS2 New N.C. Maths Impact Sessions” are new interactive presentations which explain and reinforce knowledge and skills required to achieve the National Standard and beyond in key stage 2 new National Curriculum maths. We deliver the sessions for you in your school, using highly qualified and skilled presenters, over either a half or full day. Key areas of the new National Curriculum are delivered and reinforced in a clear, fun and dynamic way, which will ensure both progress and fun over each session.

All sessions consist of three sections. (Click here for brochure showing full details of each session.)

Section 1:    An interactive presentation of knowledge and skills.

Section 2:   Practical and fun reinforcement activities to back up knowledge and skills learned.

Section 3:    Knowledge and skills applied to SATS questions.

KS2 New N.C. Maths Impact Sessions are most effective when delivered monthly through the course of Year 6, but can be delivered over a much shorter time frame. They are also very effective used as Saturday or holiday schools.

Sessions are ideally suited to groups of up to 30 pupils.

There are 8 sessions available, each covering a key area of the maths syllabus in the new National Curriculum. In addition to these 8 sessions, there are also 3 half day revision sessions for delivery prior to the actual SATS exams.

Your pupils will love maths delivered in this way, which enhances the work of the class teacher, while your school achieves significantly improved SATS results.

THE PHOENIX PROGRESS SYSTEM - A SYSTEM OF ASSESSING STUDENT PROGRESS, SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION SECTOR.

Due to the nature of many alternative provision schools, students are admitted at various times in the academic year. The students admitted have, in most cases and for a variety of reasons, become disengaged or disaffected with education and may have underachieved for months, or even years, prior to joining the school. Consequently, the only fair way to judge an AP school’s impact on the students’ progress, is to measure progress from their point of admission. It is important that two key factors are taken into account so that progress can be measured fairly and realistically. They are:

Baseline assessment levels on admission to the school.
Number of school weeks since admission to the school.

“Actual progress since admission” is then compared against “expected progress since admission“ using national standards to analyse performance.

AVERAGE STUDENT PROGRESS SINCE ADMISSION (ASPA)

This is the key indicator of core academic progress used in the Phoenix Progress System and measures progress across all core subjects from admission to present. An average half termly core progress figure is calculated for each student. This can then be used to calculate an average ASPA figure for the whole school population. “Average student progress since admission” (ASPA) can also be used to measure progress for sub-groups within the school in order to compare performance of that sub-group against the performance of the whole school population.

The Phoenix Progress System has been designed specifically for use in alternative provision schools. As such, it enables the school to demonstrate the impact it is having on its students’ progress, therefore showing the school in its best light. A number of Merseyside schools are currently using the Phoenix Progress System to successfully show off their schools with both governors and Ofsted.
